Introduction to Forest Habitat Types workshop

June 16-18, 2015, the University of Idaho Extension will present a workshop about forest habitat types. Register by June 6.

This program will feature a combination of indoor and outdoor educational experiences designed to help people identify forest habitat types and use habitat typing to guide forest management decisions. Topics:

Habitat Typing Concepts
− Ecological Land Classification Systems
− Basic Habitat Type Concepts
− Importance and Uses of Habitat Typing
Identifying Habitat Types and Indicator Plants
− Basic Plant Morphology and Taxonomy
− Dry, Moist, and Cold Habitat Types and Corresponding Indicator Plants
Identifying Habitat Types in the Field
− We will visit a range of different habitat types.

Field coaches will help participants identify individual plant species (and distinguish them from similar plants), identify habitat types with plots, and discuss forest management implications.

Like most forestry workshops of this kind, there's some classroom time and a lot of time in the field. Days can be long and you will need to be prepared for the conditions. There's a list of required equipment.

The Habitat Type course will meet in the University of Idaho Extension Office in Kootenai County, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho (1808 North 3rd Street, Coeur d’Alene, ID). Class will start at 8:00 am on Tuesday, June 16th, 2015. Cost is $45.

For registration questions and a registration form, contact the UI Extension Office in Kootenai County at 208-446-1680.
